Positions of the teams on points table and understanding possible results
Third edition of Pakistan super league has a new team, Multan Sultans, which is included now after playing first two editions with only five teams. Previously, 5 teams used to play two matches with each of other four teams and top four qualify for the next round and fifth eliminated. In previous both editions Lahore Qalandars remained at the bottom of the table and still same trend is being followed by Lahore Qalandars team. There are some questions that everyone is having in their mind and confusing every supporter about the fate of their team. In this article we have tried to answer all queries regarding positions on the points table. This article will help you assessing what’s done in the previous matches and remaining matches will further clarify the if-and-but scenarios described below.
A look at the points table:
Multan Sultan already qualified to next round?
Yes, unofficially Multan sultan has qualified for the final. It is leading the points table since the day one and retained its position till the time. It has won 4 matches, lost 2 matches, from Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators, and one drawn with Karachi kings. This collectively made 9 points for Multan Sultans after 7 matches, with 3 group-matches left. Even if Multan Sultans loses their all remaining matches, still it will be qualifying for next round, due to benefit of 1 extra point of match drawn.
Quetta Gladiators are now in safe zone?
Due to Its better run-rate it is second on points table and has points equal to Islamabad United. Its run-rate will be helping it, if it could retain its run-rate in next 3 group-matches. Quetta has to win against either of Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi to get into safe zone.
What Islamabad United needs to do?
With only 6 matches played, Islamabad United has already earned 8 points. Still Islamabad United has 4 group-matches to play and today, 9th March, if it will be able to defeat Multan Sultans then Islamabad will be on the top of table and in safe zone. Otherwise, it also needs a decisive win against either of Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators.
Karachi Kings – A journey from top toward bottom of the points table.
Team won its first 3 matches consecutively and shared top position with Multan Sultans in the first days. Karachi Kings also has Shahid Khan Afridi – Pakistan’s most popular and loved cricketer. It all started in 5th match, when Shahid Afridi got injured and couldn’t play the match, Karachi Kings lost 5th match without Afridi and 6th match with Afridi. With one point of a match drawn, Karchi kings has 7 points and 4 group matches left to play. Every defeat of Peshawar Zalmi will be a good sign for Karachi Kings.
Can Peshawar Zalmi make it to next level?
Defending Champion Peshawar Zalmi is now at 5th position out of 6 teams, with only above of Lahore Qalandars but has 4 matches to play. Victories against the top teams, Multan Sultans, Quetta Gladiators, Islamabad United, will help Peshawar Zalmi to keep 8 points as bench mark to qualify. Peshawar Zalmi has bright chances to go to next round and at same time have tough competition with Karachi Kings for 4th position
IS there any chance for Lahore Qalandars to play in home ground?
Dramatically, there is one chance for Lahore Qalandars to go to next round. Next round will be played in Lahore, Pakistan and home ground of Lahore Qalandars. Lahore Qalandars have still four matches to play and have lost all 6 matches already played in PSL-3. If Lahore Qalandar wins all four matches, Karchi Kings lose all their matches and Peshawar Zalmi wins only one match against Karachi kings. But, if any of these three scenarios couldn’t happen Lahore Qalandars will be disqualified.
